The layouts of my art pieces are based very loosely on early illuminated manuscript pages.  I can't think of a more expressive or articulate medium than this combination of text and illustration.

I use two gold-leafing techniques; flat gilding, in which the gold is adhered by means of a thin solution of gum ammoniac - this application results in a matte gold  finish, into which I often emboss designs... and raised gilding, where the leaf is applied to a gesso I make from a 14th c. recipe, using tiny amounts of intriguing ingredients, including dental plaster, sugar and fish glue.  This gilding process spans 3 days, and results in a raised-effect gold finish that is burnished to mirror brightness.
